Lacquer Earrings - Materials, Design and Care

Overview

Our lacquer earrings are made using traditional handcraft techniques in Vietnam with final hand-finishing completed right here in New Zealand. Each piece is designed to feel light, comfortable, and easy to wear, while allowing the natural materials and lacquer work to remain the focus.

Variations in colour, texture, and detail are part of the process and reflect the handmade nature of the work.

Materials

The core material used in our lacquer earrings is natural coconut shell, chosen for its light weight and strength. It forms the base of each piece and helps keep the earrings comfortable for everyday wear.

Lacquer is applied by hand to create layered colour and depth on the front. Depending on the design, additional natural materials may be incorporated, including:

  • Mother-of-pearl
  • Eggshell
  • Seashell

For the ear hooks, we use 316 surgical stainless steel, a material commonly chosen for sensitive ears. It is durable, comfortable to wear, and less likely to cause irritation for many people.

These elements are selected not only for their visual appeal but also for their lightweight and gentle feel.

Comfort & Wear

All materials are chosen with comfort in mind. The earrings are lightweight and designed to sit easily on the ears without unnecessary pressure. They are suitable for everyday wear, while still feeling considered and special.

Care Instructions

To keep your lacquer earrings in good condition:

  • Avoid contact with water, perfume, and chemicals
  • Wipe gently with a soft, dry cloth after wearing
  • Store separately to avoid scratches

With simple care, the materials will age naturally and retain their character over time.
